Halo 3 was a lot of fun to play through with friends. I stand by its #4 spot. Sorry, Lady!
Bioshock - GOTY fo' sho'. The competition was steep this year, but as an overall experience it stands head and shoulders above the rest. Every single element works to ground you in that universe (as opposed to say, Assassin's Creed, which reminds you at practically every turn you're in a simulation).
You're spot-on with your AC appraisal. There's some good gameplay concepts at work here, and the graphics are, of course, stunning, but it's an uneven experience overall. Here's hoping they work out the kinks for the inevitable sequel (and move it out of the Holy Land - I think this game exhausted that geographic area, and the framing device they're using leaves it open to lots of different locations and time periods). Oh - and no more g*ddamn flag collecting, Ubisoft. Also, would it have killed you guys to come up with more than 4 responses from the citizens you save? No. No, I don't think it would have. All in all, I certainly am glad I bought an HDTV earlier this year. Now, I can't even imagine playing Bioshock or especially Mass Effect on my old 27" piece o' crap.
I hate first person shooters as well although Bioshock was a huge exception.
I think it should definitly be picked for best game of 2007. Never really played Halo...I play video games but don't really consider myself a gamer.
Bioshock - great game, yes - definitely deserving of a spot on a best-of list. Flawless - no.
There were a lot of plasmids to choose from, but since some were simply superior to others, that makes the choices somewhat less impressive. For instance, should i freeze the bad guy and kill him easily but get no loot, or shock him and kill him easily and get loot? It also had tightly limited environments with lots of obvious invisible walls and very limited physics interactions compared to HL2, which is built on technology from 4 years ago. Compare a simple scripted NPC interaction. I rescued a Little Sister - yay me. Now she's thanking me, and being the nice guy i am, i crouch to be more on her level and put her at ease. She stares up into space above my head. Even when i stand up, she's still not quite looking at me. Alyx Vance can meet my eyes whether i'm standing, crouching, jumping, climbing on top of stuff, or doing all of the above in succession. Let's not dismiss the fact that this creepy, cool, brain-twisting game makes me want to crouch to put a scary little virtual kid more at ease. The atmosphere and story with its surprise twist and self-referential implications definitely put this game in the running on an all-time best-of list. Now, would you kindly give me your "Best Comics of 2007" list that you mentioned a while back?
Blah blah blah - my name is Blair Butler and instead of updating my blog i like to do things that i actually get paid for so i can eat food and not be homeless - blah blah blah!
Just having a little fun at your expense because i enjoy reading what you have to say here.
Why dont you own a ps3 yet? Granted uncharted is probably the best, ratchet and clank comes a close second. Other than that i agree with 90% of the games u have up there, AC nearly gave me a heart attack with the terribly dissapointing ending
Greetings Blair! Look forward to your next post -- don't keep us hanging for too long! As for this post, I agree, 4 player co-op on Halo 3 was a blast!
